On October 28th 2026 from 10am–11:30am Kristina Richts-Matthaei, Annabella Schmitz and Robert Zwick (Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz) will talk about “Giving Music Metadata a Voice. Introducing MerMEId MeLODy for FAIR Music Metadata” in the next HERMES Open Colloquium and provide a deep dive into the internationally established music editing tool.

MerMEId MeLODy (https://music-metadata-tools.github.io/MerMEId-Website/) is an open‑source, browser‑based metadata editor built on an RDF-based data model and designed for the creation of well‑formed MEI (Music Encoding Initiative) metadata for thematic work catalogues and source catalogues. The tool is aimed at musicologists, music librarians and developers who need to produce interoperable, FAIR‑compliant metadata for musical works, sources, persons or events, without the need for specialised software installation. In this online session participants will receive a live demonstration of the editor, practical guidance on modelling data according to FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) principles, and an overview of how the MEI and RDF output can be integrated into existing library and research environments.

MerMEId MeLODy builds on the proven MerMEId editor developed at the Danish Centre for Music Editing and adds a modern, web‑native interface that generates sophisticated RDF/Turtle output directly synchronised with the MEI 5.1 schema. The RDF data model is deliberately aligned with both the MEI schema and the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) conceptual model, ensuring that every piece of structured metadata can be reliably transformed into MEI/XML for use in MEI‑based workflows, research infrastructures and digital editions.
